Choosing your crystals (or letting them choose you) is one of the first steps in opening your intuition to begin building your relationship with them. For the purpose of these lessons, I am grouping crystals, gems, minerals and tektites together and calling them crystals because, well, it’s just easier to say crystals than crystals, gems, minerals and tektites every time I reference them.
With so many crystals on the planet and from the sky, choosing the ones you want to work with can seem like a difficult task. How do you know which crystal to choose? As with everything else we teach, simply use your intuition.
If you don’t have access to crystals right now, you can select them from a book, make a list, and then go in search of the crystals that have called out to you. One of my favorite books is Judy Hall’s “Crystal Bible”. I like it because it is small enough to carry around with me. Many of the examples in the book are relatively inexpensive and easy to find. Of course, there are many other good books out there (in fact I have a bookcase full of them!) so select whatever feels right to you.
You can also use pictures or a Crystal Oracle deck to represent the crystals if you don’t have access to the actual thing right now.
Aeolus and had privilege of working together at Phoenix and Dragon, in Atlanta, GA. P&D (as we lovingly called it) has two walls that are floor to ceiling displays of crystals. We have watched people walk to the crystal wall and make a selection in just a couple of minutes. We have also watched people spend literally hours in front of the crystals trying to decide which ones to purchase.
Does that mean that the people who chose their crystals quickly were more intuitive? No, it just means they were faster at purchasing. The people who purchased quickly could have spent hours at home making their decision before they came to the store. The people who spent hours looking at the crystals, could have come in the store intending to pick up their crystal quickly and then ended up spending hours “talking and listening” to the other crystals while they were there. The whole point of telling you this story is to remind you that however you choose to choose your crystals, that it is the absolute right way FOR YOU! You don’t need to spend your time wondering if you are doing it correctly because you may see someone doing it differently than you. They do it their way, you do it yours. That’s the way it works!
So, how to you actually choose which crystals you need to work with?
Use your intuition. (You are going to hear that a lot from us!) If you are not sure how to do that, have no fear, we are going to share with you what we have learned.
WHAT IS INTUITION
First, let’s chat about intuition for a minute. What is intuition? The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it this way: “a natural ability or power that makes it possible to know something without any proof or evidence: a feeling that guides a person to act a certain way without fully understanding why.”
Isn’t that awesome! You don’t have to know how or why it works. You just have to know THAT IT WORKS! You don’t have to put any pressure on yourself. Know that you are a Crystal Intuitive because YOU decide YOU ARE! Believe in yourself. We already believe in you!
WHAT DOES INTUITION FEEL LIKE
Well, that is a little harder to explain. There are as many different ways to experience intuition as there are people experiencing it. You will have to learn for yourself how your intuition speaks to you. When you pick up a crystal, pay close attention to your experience with it. Remember, each crystal may engage your intuition in a different manner. You may get one feeling from Rose Quartz and a totally different feeling from Hematite.
WAYS YOUR INTUITION MAY EXPRESS ITSELF
We can give you some examples but these are by no means the only way:
- Feeling warm, cold, or tingly
- Heart beating faster or slower
- Seeing colors, auras, wisps of smoke or seeing things magnified or diminished
- Hearing sounds, whispers, music, chimes
- Smelling scents
- Just knowing
So take a few deep breaths, be still, and listen to what your intuition is trying to tell you.
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS IN YOUR JOURNAL:
- Which crystal am I drawn to work with right this minute?
- How do I feel when I think about this crystal?
- How do I feel when I hold this crystal?
- Why do I feel drawn to this crystal?
CHOOSING YOUR CRYSTALS
Whether you are looking at the crystal in person or looking at a picture of it, look at the crystal, pick it up and touch it. Hold it close to your ear and “listen” to what it is saying to you. If you are working from a book, touch the picture with your fingers. Close your eyes and listen for any messages or feelings.
Which crystal catches your eye above all the others? It may be the one lying on top of all the others, or it could be peeking out at you from the bottom of a pile. Look at the crystal, pick it up and touch it. Hold it in your hand, close your eyes and “see” what it is saying to you.
If the crystals are lying on a surface, hold your hand over them. Where do you feel the heat? Where do you feel tingling? Which one pulls at your heart? Which one simply makes you smile? Close your eyes and reach out for the one that calls your hand to touch it. “feel” what it is saying to you.
If you are standing in front of a multiple crystals, which one will not let you go? Which one draws your eye again and again? Which one stands out and shines at you above all the others? What does your intuition tell you? Trust that feeling. Intuition is real.
Let the crystal choose you. Many times, the crystal that first draws you in is the one for you. It may not be the most beautiful crystal in the sense of physical beauty. It may be chipped, cracked, and dull in places. It may not have the most brilliant color of the crystals surrounding it. It may be cloudy or clear. Take this crystal with you. It has chosen you.
It doesn’t do any good to look for THE perfect crystal…. because the truth is…they are ALL perfect. They each have a lesson to teach us about ourselves. One of these lessons is that we may also be chipped, cracked, and dull in places. We may not be the most beautiful or the most brilliant, but we, also, are perfect just the way we are.
By the way, if you are drawn to many crystals and find it hard to choose between them, our philosophy has always been to purchase as many as your can comfortably afford. You can never have too many crystals, no matter what you may hear to the contrary.

On a side note… Once you begin bringing crystals “home” with you, more crystals will find their way “home“ to you. Crystals just love being with other crystals! You could almost believe that they get together at night and create other little crystals. Count all of your crystals today and count them again in a year and you will see what we mean.
